Meet the Chef:
Toby Tylor first started cooking at the age of 12. His introduction to the culinary world came in the form of Home Economics class (to meet pretty girls) and recipes on Campbell’s Soup cans. By the age of 16 Toby was a Breakfast Cook/Dishwasher at Cafe Engange on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. There he prepared Late Night meals for Jazz Musicians and the rest of the Bohemian Culture. Toby later became a Sous Chef at Chez Victor, a French Restaurant in Vancouver; before meeting his mentor Harry Barberian. Under Harry’s tutelage Toby became a Chef Rotisserie at Toronto’s Landmark Barberian’s Steakhouse. In the 1970s Toby returned to Vancouver and was the Chef/Proprietor of the now iconic The Naam Cafe- Vegetarian Restaurant. The next decade was spent travelling the World, cooking in a Northern Canadian Mining Camps, creating Art, studying Theology & Philosophy. Toby was also became Sous Chef at Peter Pan Bistro and Executive Chef at Retirement Homes in Toronto.
In 1986 Toby opened Electric City Gardens. As a newcomer to the area he was unaware that Peterborough was already known as the “Electric City”. Toby named his business in homage to Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland album and the Electric Circus Nightclub at St Mark’s Place, Manhattan.
Toby is passionate about cooking and genuinely desires for everyone to have a wonderful experience at his restaurant .
Even after 50 years of cooking professionally Toby is learning more every day and welcomes new culinary challenges.
